HCMC
University of Technology and Education in my opinion is a good University in
Vietnam, it may be because it is my first visit to Vietnam and just stay in
HCMUTE for my teaching practicum. Students of this university are great, they
can welcome new people very well with their diversity. While, This University
has good management how to handle all exchange students that is giving the best
service to what student’s need and accommodation. My teaching practicum here
runs really well, with a great team and incredible supervisor who guided me for
everything in my teaching practicum. Such an honor for me to learn more about
to be a good teacher in this university. What I want for the next time is that,
I hope there will be next batch from my home university to have the teaching
practicum again in HCMUTE, and I hope they will do so much better than me.

I
have three times of teaching, 2 for General English and 1 for ESP. The teaching
activity has been shown before this article on a lesson plan. I conducted many
activities for every subject, which has been consulted to my own supervisor,
Ms. Le Thi Thanh Ha who has already guided me since the first I start the
process of my PPL in HCMUTE. Also, she always give me very good and clear
feedback on my teaching practicum. Such as;
My
supervisor said that, I am confidence enough to teach students, but sometimes I
am too thigh and have too serious facial expression which can make students
uncomfortable. I couldn’t give clear
instruction for students to do the activity in the class, however it really
influences the teaching and learning process.
My supervisor also says that I have loud voice which can be categorized
as the strength, and it can be used to attract student’s attention to listen
and see teacher explanations. Then, many things that should be improved from my
teaching performance is that on how I can give clear instructions for students
to do their activity and keep smiling to face students. Also, the way how to check students
understanding should be improved by always practicing to make questions for
students to answer. This is really important to know and make sure that all
students have understood what is asked by teacher for students to do.
Sometimes, providing situations is really important to help students to
understand new vocabularies, which in this part a teacher should be master in
explaining the situation of each words with easy way. At last, the important
thing that should be improved is that how to always elicit answer from students
by asking some questions that should be prepared before coming to the class.
Have a Good Plan

Before
conducting the teaching practice, the first thing that I do is observation.
Observation is activity to observe something to know the situation in that
place. In this activity, I observe some teachers and student teacher. Every
teacher has their own style in teaching the students. By doing observation, I
can know the best way to teach students, (manage the class, using appropriate
method, giving feedback, reinforcement, and use appropriate instructional
media), know some characteristics of the students, (what they need and what
they do not need), and the environment in the class. I can learn so much from
this observation. Next is making lesson plan. Lesson plan is very important in
teaching. Lesson plan is used as reference to carry out teaching activities to
be more focused, run effectively and efficiently. In other words, the lesson
plan acts as a scenario for the teaching process. In lesson plan there are
several things that very important, such as the objectives of lesson plan, the
method that will be used, and the teaching aids. The lesson plan can also help
the teacher if the teacher forgets the activities and for students it will make
them able to understand all of the lesson. Before I make lesson plan, I have to
understand the lesson first and after that try to make the plan for the
teaching. From the observation, I can know the students’ characteristic. So
that I can choose the best method for students and also use appropriate
instructional media. Next is instructional media. This media refers to the
power point with the audio. Before teach students, I make the teaching
materials and also with the power point. I make the teaching materials as
simple as possible and put on ppt. Using power point in teaching will make students
easier to understand about the lesson and also easier for the teacher to
explain the material. The audio will help students in listening practice. Next
is mental. I prepared the mental because this is my first time in teaching
English for foreign students. The last is prepared the rewards for the
students. This reward will be used as thing to make students more active than
before. In other words, will increase their activeness.

Foreign Language Faculty

In
HCMUTE I have my teaching practicum in the Foreign Language Faculty especially
in General English and English for Specific Purposes Classes. The Faculty of
Foreign Languages (FFL) used to be a Department of Foreign Languages
subordinated to the Faculty of Basic Science. In 2007, the Department of
Foreign Languages was separated and officially operated independently from its
former faculty. Nowadays, the FFL is in charge of delivering a bachelor’s
program in Technical English Education and English Language Studies. Within the
common trend of regional and international integration, English has assumed an
ever more important role in a multilingual and multicultural working
environment. The Technical English Education and English Language Studies
programs delivered by FFL aims to provide the labor market with white collar
workers, knowledgeable about ESP, and able to work in industrial parks,
export-processing zones, companies, factories and plants, as well as for
foreign offices, international and non- governmental organizations, where
English is required.

After
having campus tour and several days to know Ho Chi Minh University of Education
and Technology, I got more informations about the campus that will be the place
for me to have the teaching practicum for a month. So, here is the detail
information about HCMUTE, or we can say as the school profile.
Ho
Chi Minh City University of Technology and Education (HCMUTE) is the first institution in Vietnam that
educates, trains and creates the workforce of technical teachers for the country.
Through time, the university’s name has been changed several times due to
integration with other schools or its own promotion.
The
university originated from the Technical Education College Department
subordinate to the Phu Tho School of Technology, founded
on October 5th,
1962, then was renamed Nguyen Truong To Technical Education
College Center of Thu Duc in 1972. Two
years later in 1974, it was upgraded to Thu Duc College of Education. On
October 27th,
1976, the institute was renamed
Thu Duc University of Technical Education in accordance with a decision of the Prime
Minister of the People’s Republic of Vietnam (now the Socialist Republic of
Vietnam). After merging with the adjacent Thu Duc Industrial High School in 1984 and further merging
with Technical Education
School V in 1991, the school
was renamed Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology and Education. In 1995, the university
incorporated with National University Ho Chi Minh City as an unofficial member.
In 2000, the school separated from the National University to become a member
under supervision of the Ministry of Education and Training, and our school’s
name was restored and has been HCMC University of Technology and Education since.
Nowadays,
the main campus of the university is located at 01, Vo Van Ngan street, Linh Chieu Ward, Thu Duc
District, about 10 km North-East from downtown of Ho Chi Minh City. With
favorable position, convenient transportation system, spacious and well-
equipped study environment, HCMUTE is highly advantageous compared to the other
universities.

Campus and Culinary Tour

Yasshhh this is my first morning in Vietnam,
feel like I am in Bali with its hot weather. Factually, it is hotter than my
expectation that is for about 34 degrees Celsius at the afternoon. My first
impression about Vietnam is the hot weather and the crowded traffic which is
exactly different from my hometown, Bali. Crowded traffic I mean here is not
only about the number of vehicles on the road, but it is more about how the
driver drove on the road with a horn that kept ringing which made the road
become very crowded. I can only sigh and stroke my chest to see how the ride a
motorcycle.:)) At last, I feel that this city is very hot and crowded and i
should always wear my mask to cover my face from unwanted pollution, that's it.
In this day, I also had a culinary
tour with Mr. Hin and 7 friends of mine. We got lunch in one of the “supermarket”
in the campus to taste some foods. “Supermarket” in this country means a restaurant
in Indonesia, means that we have different meanings of a place for eating. LOL.
Okay, btw in this supermarket we were given menus in Vietnamese language in
which my friends and I really don’t understand at all. So, we just trust Mr. Hin
to order some food for us. Before the main course come, we were given cup of rice,
banana, and traditional tea from Vietnam. Yeay, our order had come and we were
like saying “WHAT??” in our mind, it was beef and carrot, cabbage and chicken,
and the taste that I hardly should say were not too good. It was not suitable with
my taste of tongue. FYI, the taste of some foods in Vietnam are salty, and the
rest are tasteless. Nothing is suitable with my taste, but I try to adapt with
all of the foods for my life in a month in Vietnam. Fortunately, I still can
receive many taste of the dessert here and some traditional snacks sold. I
cannot say the name of the food because those have Vietnamese name. One thing that I really don’t understand
in this city, that all Vietnamese have big portion of eating, they eat a lot of
rice more than me, but they have skinny body and I almost don’t find fat person
but me, hmm.
